How We Got Started
The Kiwanis Club of Hopkinsville started a Soap Box Derby in 2006 with just Stock and Super Stock Divisions under the leadership of Todd Moore, then President. While the first year had just 30 cars and drivers, it was not without its moments, especially when the Super Stock Division came down to a face-off after two runs and only .147 seconds separating the cars in the end.
In 2009, a Masters Division was added. In 2012, to better serve the community, the Kiwanis Club partnered with three other cities to absorb the costs of four state of the art fiberglass Super Kids cars, using materials similar to those in standard soap box cars. The inaugural run of the Hopkinsville Super Kids Classic included three kids with special needs.
In 2024, the Bluegrass Youth Racing Foundation took on the organization of the Soap Box Derby.
